How come Columbus became a bigger city in OH than Cleveland?

Back in school, I did a report on Ohio, %26amp; the largest city was Cleveland, followed by Cincinnati %26amp; then Columbus. Now recently, Columbus is OH's largest city. So far, one sorta clue for me is the appearance of new sports teams, albeit a NHL %26amp; MLS team. So, what's up w/ that? Thumbs-up for any Ohioans who respond. How come Columbus became a bigger city in OH than Cleveland?
Columbus is very nice, but it has a much larger land area than cleveland or cincinnati. The city has an area of 212.6 sq mi, thus including more people. Cincinnati, for example, has a population of only 350,000, but its land area is only 76 sq mi. If you have ever been to cinci, you will recognize right away that it is a MUCH larger city than Columbus, as is reflected by the Cinci metro which is more than 2.2 million, vs Columbus's 1.7. Cleveland, as with cincinnati, has a population of only 430,000, but its land area is only 83 square miles. If Cincinnati and Cleveland included 200 sq miles in their population counts as does Columbus, they would both have much larger populations, probably nearing 700 thousand or 800 thousand. That explains the difference in population. Indianapolis does this as well.
